Long before the railway, local Indigenous peoples, including the Cree and Assiniboine (Nakoda), and the Métis, knew this land. They camped near Boggy Creek and used the flat-topped butte as a lookout and signal point, and the Cree called it Otasawâpiwin, meaning "his lookout." That hill gave Pilot Butte its name, chosen in 1883 to mean "lookout point," after the place where buffalo were watched for.
